Over the years, requests
for my photography has taken me to some of the great
race tracks around the country, such as Daytona, Laguna
Seca, and Road America to name a few. Lately though, my
focus (no pun intended!) has me covering local sporting
events in SW Indiana and Kentucky-covering the
“traditional ball and stick” sports of Football,
Baseball, Basketball, and Soccer, etc….
In 2008, I added two new sports of
Hockey and Lacrosse, but the latest request has to be
the most unique competition I have attended, either as a
fan or photographer.
Powerlifting is something I recall watching on
ABC’s Wide World of Sports and perhaps during the
Summer Olympics, but only if there was nothing else
on…..So when I received the request to be the official
photographer for a ‘National Tournament’ held in
Evansville, I cautiously accepted and looked forward to
covering the event and attempting to capture images which told part
of the story…
What I was able to experience was a sport, where both
young and old….male and female…competed at the highest
level of strength performance. From a female
participant who has only been competing for just a few
years (as a way to stay in shape)… to young men still in
middle school…to men five times (and then some!) the
ages of the youngest competitors, the competition at the
WDFPF National Tournament was impressive.
Even more impressive, was how the competitors cheered
each other on to make that final lift….You don’t see
that too often….
